The lower house of parliament, known as the Lok Sabha, symbolizes the essence of democratic representation. With its vast electorate and diverse demographics, India's electoral process stands as a fort to democratic ideals on a large scale. As the world's largest democratic event, elections in India reflect the voice of over a billion people, shaping the future direction of the nation through the power of the ballot. Elections in India are fought by many political parties, as the multi-party system is prevalent in it. The largest party or alliance forms the government at the center and the leader of such party or coalition is elected as the Prime Minister, the most powerful man in the country.

Private detectives conduct investigations for clients, using surveillance and various techniques to uncover information discreetly, such as infidelity or corporate espionage. But it is also a well-preserved secret that political parties and politicians also hire the services of private detectives for investigations. There is an insatiable demand for information by political parties, hence the requirement for private investigators. Private detectives play a large but hidden role in all political parties. However, no one knows about the historical context or when and how frequently private detectives are used in political campaigns. Most of the time politicians and political parties sign a strict Non-disclosure agreement with private detective agencies. The phenomenon of hiring the services of PI is not restricted to India, the world over there are several cases of political parties using private detective agencies. Political parties have turned smarter and use the latest trends to outfox their rivals.

Even in India, there are several cases where the use of private detectives by political parties has been unearthed. The earliest example of exposure was in 1977.  Babu Jagjivan Ram was a close associate of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, but after thirty years of association with Congress, he went away and fought against the Indian National Congress.  Smt Maneka Gandhi the daughter-in-law of Smt Indira Gandhi hired private detectives and set up a trap. Maneka Gandhi published a nude photograph of Babu Jagjivan Ram’s forty-six-year-old son Suresh with a twenty-one-year-old Delhi University student Sushma Chaudhary, in a magazine called Surya.  The intimate photographs in compromising positions ruined the political career of Babu Jagjvan Ram. Just recently BJP declared its candidate for the 2023 Lok Sabha elections and ex-MP Upender Singh Rana was given a ticket from the Barabanki Lok Sabha seat. An obscene video of Upender Singh Rana was leaked just after the list was declared by the Bhartiya Janta Party. Upender Singh Rana cried foul that the video was forged and created by AI.

VP Singh used the services of private detective Michael Hershman from Fairfax to expose the Bofors scandal during the reign of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. In the recent past private detectives Anurag Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Vijay, and Kuldeep were arrested for the illegal phone taping of MP Amar Singh. The scandal rocked parliament in 2006. The alleged tapes also contained the voices of Bipasha Basu, Anil Ambani, Mulayam Singh, etc. In 2013 three Delhi police personnel and three private detectives were arrested by the special cell of Delhi Police. They allegedly tried to procure the CDRs of Arun Jaitley, a prominent leader of the opposition. They were also found to be in the possession of CDRs of Nitin Gadkari, Vijay Goel, and Lalit Modi, the erstwhile commissioner of IPL.

There has been a substantial increase in the use of private detectives by political parties in the recent past. Elections are no longer based on caste management or pole management as earlier. Political espionage is the new norm in India. There are strategies to be made which can be done only by micro-management and getting the minutest of information. There is a growing reliance on sophisticated methods to secure electoral success. There are many reasons for driving this surge in demand for private detectives. The increasing focus on their opponents' strategies, weaknesses, and potential vulnerabilities has necessitated the services of private investigators. Private detectives offer a discreet and efficient means to gather such crucial information. Not only political parties but candidates too need the services of private detectives. Candidates wish to know the moves of their rivals.

Comparing traditional campaign strategies with modern detective-based approaches reveals a stark contrast. While traditional methods relied heavily on public rallies, speeches, door-to-door canvassing, and mass media advertisements, modern campaigns leverage data analytics, social media monitoring, and targeted messaging. Nowadays candidates look for booth-level information. Therefore, the entire landscape of electioneering has changed in the last few decades. Political parties who do not adopt modern strategies simply perish. Private detectives play an important role in gathering intelligence on voter preferences, public sentiments, burning issues, and identifying micro-targeting opportunities, enabling parties to tailor their campaigns with precision. Inputs by private detectives play a very crucial role in policy formation. The tech-oriented modern political response has made the traditional approach obsolete.
